Trunk road
Country road
Carriage way
Street
Street
In highway engineering terminology, a 'street' is defined as a public road within a town or city, typically having houses or buildings on one or both sides. Unlike highways or trunk roads designed for high-speed intercity transit, streets emphasize accessibility to properties and serve as components of the urban transport network.
In highway engineering terminology, a 'street' is defined as a public road within a town or city, typically having houses or buildings on one or both sides. Unlike highways or trunk roads designed for high-speed intercity transit, streets emphasize accessibility to properties and serve as components of the urban transport network.
A street is primarily designed for land access and local traffic circulation within an urban setting.
Trunk roads connect major cities and towns, often bypass urban centers to facilitate higher speeds.
The functional classification of roads is categorized based on mobility vs. accessibility requirements.
The term 'Carriageway' refers specifically to the part of the road constructed for the movement of vehicles, not the entire road entity.
Facilitates local economic activity
Provides essential utility access (water, electricity, sewage)
High frequency of intersections increases accident potential
On-street parking often reduces effective capacity
Residential zones
Central Business Districts (CBD)
Commercial local streets
The IRC (Indian Roads Congress) classification groups roads into National Highways, State Highways, Major District Roads, Other District Roads, and Village Roads.
Option A (Trunk road) refers to main roads carrying heavy traffic between regions.
Option B (Country road) generally refers to rural roads serving agricultural areas.
Option C (Carriage way) is a sub-element of the road cross-section representing the paved width for vehicular traffic.
D is correct тАФ A road within a town or city environment characterized by building frontage and land access is technically defined as a street.
Always differentiate between 'functional classification' (mobility vs access) and 'administrative classification' (NH, SH, MDR, ODR, VR) when studying Transportation Engineering.
