Polarization is a phenomenon exclusive to transverse waves, where the orientation of oscillations is restricted to a specific plane. Since light waves can be polarized, they must possess a transverse nature, meaning their electric and magnetic field oscillations occur perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation.

Since light waves can be polarized, they must possess a transverse nature, meaning their electric and magnetic field oscillations occur perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation.
Imagine a vibrating string passing through a vertical picket fence; the string can only vibrate vertically through the slats, proving the waves are moving perpendicular to the string's length.
I=I0cos2θ — Malus's Law, describing the intensity of polarized light passing through an analyzer
In an unpolarized wave, electric field vectors vibrate in all possible directions perpendicular to the direction of motion. When passed through a polarizer (like a Polaroid filter), only those components of the wave vibrating parallel to the transmission axis of the filter are allowed to pass. This geometric restriction is physically impossible for longitudinal waves (like sound), which oscillate only along the direction of propagation.
Longitudinal waves, such as sound waves, cannot be polarized because their oscillation direction is parallel to the propagation vector.
Light is an electromagnetic wave, which is inherently transverse.
The electric field vector E and magnetic field vector B are both perpendicular to the direction of propagation v.

| Feature | Sound Waves | Light Waves |

Wave Nature | Longitudinal | Transverse |
Polarization confirms the transverse nature of light, which was central to refuting the corpuscular theory of light in certain contexts.
Option A is incorrect because sound is a longitudinal wave and cannot be polarized. Option C is incorrect because while light has particle-like properties (photons), particle theory alone does not explain polarization. Option D is incorrect as polarization is a property of wave motion, not a property defining energy itself.
B is correct — The phenomenon of polarization demonstrates that light waves oscillate perpendicular to their direction of propagation, identifying them as transverse waves.
Always remember: Polarization = Transverse (Light/EM waves), Diffraction/Interference = Wave Nature (both Longitudinal and Transverse).
