Counterpoise earthing
Counterpoise earthing consists of four lengths of galvanized steel stranded wires or continuous underground conductors connected to the four legs of a transmission tower. It is used to lower the tower footing resistance (TFR) in areas where ground resistivity is extremely high, such as rocky or hilly terrain.

During a lightning stroke on a transmission tower or overhead ground wire (OHGW), high surge currents flow through the tower to the earth. Counterpoise conductors provide an extended parallel ground path, significantly reducing the surge impedance and tower footing resistance. This minimizes the surge potential at the tower top, thereby preventing flashovers across the line insulators.
