A Total Station is an optical-electronic instrument used in modern surveying that incorporates an Electronic Distance Meter (EDM). To reflect the infrared signals sent by the EDM back to the instrument, visual accessories such as a prism, prism holder, and prism carrier (or tribrach adaptor) are used. 'Prism tackle' is a non-existent or pseudo-technical term in surveying equipment terminology.

The Total Station emits a modulated infrared or laser beam towards a retro-reflective prism target. The prism reflects the beam precisely back to the instrument's receiver along a parallel path, allowing the instrument to measure the phase shift or travel time to accurately compute the slope distance.
A glass corner-cube prism acts as a retro-reflector to redirect the EDM laser beam directly back to the transmitter.
The prism holder secures the glass prism and attaches it to a range pole or tribrach.
The prism carrier (or adapter) allows mounting of the prism target onto a standard tripod levelling base (tribrach).
Prism tackle is a distracter term and has no function in total station measurement.
Ensures high precision in slope distance measurement.
Provides proper centering and optical leveling of the target over survey station points.
Requires proper optical prism alignment and calibration offset (prism constant correction).
Prism target components add weight to field measurement gear.
Topographical land surveys using Total Station EDM systems.
Control survey point targeting and precise construction layout positioning.
Option A (Prism): Refracts and reflects the light rays back parallel to the incoming beam.
Option B (Prism holder): Housing frame holding the optical target unit.
Option D (Prism carrier): Mount used to interface the prism assembly directly with a tripod tribrach.
Option C (Prism tackle): Incorrect option; no such component exists in survey engineering standards.
C is correct тАФ Prism tackle is not a valid component or accessory of Total Station equipment.
Always remember to account for the Prism Constant (typically тИТ30┬аmm or 0┬аmm) in Total Station distance calculations when swapping prism holders or target types.
