The correct answer is Option A: Electromagnetic Distance Measuring. M. stands for Electromagnetic Distance Measuring. It refers to a surveying instrument used to measure distances by utilizing electronic phase comparison or time-of-flight principles of electromagnetic waves.

Step-by-Step Solution & Concepts:
D.M. stands for Electromagnetic Distance Measuring. It refers to a surveying instrument used to measure distances by utilizing electronic phase comparison or time-of-flight principles of electromagnetic waves.

Working Principle: The instrument transmits a modulated electromagnetic wave (infrared, microwave, or laser) to a reflector at the target point. The wave reflects back to the instrument, which measures the phase shift or the time taken for the round trip. The distance $D$ is calculated using the relation $D = \frac{1}{2} v \cdot t$, where $v$ is the velocity of light in the medium and $t$ is the elapsed time.

Key Formulas: $D = \frac{1}{2} v \cdot t$ — Fundamental relationship for distance calculation based on wave travel time

Key Points: EDM instruments are categorized based on the carrier wave used: Microwave, Infrared, or Visible Light (Laser).; They provide high precision and are essential in modern geodetic surveys and Total Stations.; The accuracy of EDM is influenced by atmospheric conditions like temperature, pressure, and humidity which affect the refractive index.

Advantages: High degree of accuracy and precision; Ability to measure long distances (up to 100km+ for specialized systems); Reduced human error in distance measurement compared to physical taping

Disadvantages: Requires line-of-sight between stations; Higher initial cost compared to traditional mechanical tools; Dependent on external power supply (battery)

Applications: Triangulation and trilateration in surveying; Monitoring structural deformation in dams and bridges; Topographic mapping and civil engineering layout works

Additional Info: Microwave EDMs are generally used for long distances while infrared EDMs are preferred for short to medium range measurements.. Option B is incorrect because 'Meter' denotes the device, but the standard abbreviation E.D.M. stands for the technology/process 'Measuring'.

Answer: A is correct — E.D.M. stands for Electromagnetic Distance Measuring, which is the standard technical term for this surveying technique.

Exam Tip: In exams, always distinguish between the tool (Total Station) and the technology (EDM); Total Station is a combination of an EDM and an Electronic Theodolite.
