According to IS 325 and IEC 60034-1 standards for rotating electrical machines, the High Voltage (HV) test (also known as the dielectric withstand test) requires applying a specified test voltage between the windings and the frame for a duration of exactly 1 minute. This ensures that the insulation system can withstand potential transient overvoltages during operation without breakdown.

VtestтАЛ=2VratedтАЛ+1000 тАФ The standard formula used to determine the test voltage for electrical machine windings in Volts.
The HV test is a destructive or proof test that stresses the insulation dielectric. By maintaining VtestтАЛ=2VratedтАЛ+1000V for a 60-second duration, the test checks for localized defects, moisture absorption, or mechanical damage in the insulation. If the insulation can hold the leakage current within permissible limits for this duration, it is deemed fit for industrial service.
The 1-minute duration is mandatory for dielectric integrity verification.
The test is performed between the windings and the machine frame (earth).
Testing beyond 1 minute may lead to unnecessary thermal degradation of healthy insulation.
The leakage current must remain stable throughout the test duration.
Detects hidden insulation defects effectively.
Ensures safety of personnel and equipment against ground faults.
High-stress testing can occasionally accelerate aging of marginal insulation.
Requires high-precision equipment to monitor leakage current.
Routine testing of three-phase induction motors.
Post-repair insulation verification in workshops.
The 1-minute time constant is standard across most electrical manufacturing protocols including IEEE, NEMA, and IS.
Options B, C, and D are incorrect because they provide durations that do not comply with the standard dielectric test procedure for induction machines.
A is correct тАФ The standard duration for a High Voltage test on a three-phase induction motor is 1 minute to ensure dielectric stability.
Remember that while the HV test is for 1 minute, Insulation Resistance (IR) values are typically recorded after 60 seconds of applying a DC Megger voltage to allow for capacitive charging current to stabilize.
