The soundness test of cement, performed using LeChatelierтАЩs apparatus, measures the potential for delayed expansion caused by the hydration of uncombined lime (CaO). For all types of Portland cement (including 33, 43, and 53 grades), the expansion must not exceed 10 mm.

The apparatus consists of a small split cylinder of spring brass. The cement paste is filled into the cylinder, and the distance between the two indicators (needles) is measured. The assembly is then submerged in boiling water for 3 hours, causing expansion due to hydration of excess lime. The difference in distance between the indicators before and after boiling provides the expansion value.
The test specifically detects unsoundness due to free lime.
Unsoundness due to magnesia is detected by the Autoclave expansion test.
The boiling period of the specimen is exactly 3 hours.
Le Chatelier apparatus is primarily used to ensure long-term durability of concrete structures.
Simple and easy to perform in site laboratories.
Provides a direct visual indicator of potential expansion.
Does not measure expansion caused by Magnesia (MgO).
Sensitive to the precision of the initial measurement of the gap between indicator pointers.
Quality control in cement manufacturing plants.
Acceptance testing of cement bags at large construction sites.
If the expansion exceeds 10 mm, the cement is considered unsound and is rejected.
Option A (15), C (12), and D (5) are incorrect as they do not meet the standardized limit defined by IS codes for Portland cement.
B is correct тАФ The standard limit for expansion of Portland cement in the Le Chatelier test is 10 mm.
Always remember that LeChatelier only checks Lime (CaO). If the question asks about Magnesia (MgO), the correct test is the Autoclave expansion test, which has a separate limit of 0.8%.
