What are the methods used for general exploration?

Question

Examoogle · Accepted Answer

The correct answer is Option A: Subsurface penetration. General exploration in soil mechanics involves determining the stratigraphy and engineering properties of soil deposits. Subsurface penetration (such as Standard Penetration Test or Cone Penetration Test) is a fundamental method used to assess soil strength and density at various depths.

Step-by-Step Solution & Concepts:
General exploration in soil mechanics involves determining the stratigraphy and engineering properties of soil deposits. Subsurface penetration (such as Standard Penetration Test or Cone Penetration Test) is a fundamental method used to assess soil strength and density at various depths.

Working Principle: Subsurface penetration works by driving a sampling tool or probe into the ground and measuring the resistance encountered. The resistance to penetration is correlated to the shear strength, relative density, and consistency of the soil layers. Data collected helps in creating a soil profile for structural foundation design.

Key Formulas: $N \propto \frac{1}{q_c}$ — Empirical relationship between SPT ($N$) and CPT resistance ($q_c$); $D_r = \sqrt{\frac{N}{C_n C_p}}$ — Relative density estimation from penetration resistance

Key Points: Exploration methods are categorized into direct, semi-direct, and indirect methods.; Subsurface penetration provides continuous or interval-based data on soil stratigraphy.; Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is the most widely used field test for site investigation.; Groundwater observation is a critical component of every subsurface investigation program.

Advantages: Provides real-time data on soil consistency and density; Economical for large site characterization

Disadvantages: Cannot provide visual inspection of soil samples compared to trial pits; Disturbance of sensitive clays can affect test results

Applications: Shallow and deep foundation design; Settlement analysis for high-rise buildings; Slope stability assessment

Additional Info: Groundwater exploration is a vital part of the investigation phase but is considered a distinct objective rather than a penetration method.. Rock cuttings are typically associated with rotary drilling in hard strata, not a general exploration method for all soil types.

Answer: A is correct — Subsurface penetration methods like SPT or CPT are the primary techniques utilized to evaluate in-situ engineering properties of soil deposits.

Exam Tip: Always remember that while groundwater data is part of a Geotechnical Investigation Report (GIR), 'penetration' is the technical mechanism for strength assessment, not the exploration program as a whole.
