Chlor-alkali process
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), commonly known as caustic soda, is manufactured industrially by the electrolysis of an aqueous solution of sodium chloride (Na┬аCl), which is called brine. This method is called the Chlor-alkali process because the main products formed are chlorine (Cl2тАЛ, 'chlor') and sodium hydroxide (NaOH, 'alkali').
Imagine a solution filled with salt (Na┬аCl) and water (H2тАЛO). Passing electric current acts like a sorting magnetтАФpulling chlorine out as a gas at one post, venting off hydrogen gas at the other, and leaving behind a concentrated liquid soap base (NaOH) in the tank.
Remember 'CAN-HAC': Chlorine at Anode (+), Hydrogen at Cathode (-).

When electricity is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride (brine), it decomposes to form sodium hydroxide, chlorine gas, and hydrogen gas. At the anode (+), chloride ions lose electrons to form chlorine gas (Cl2тАЛ). At the cathode (-), hydrogen ions gain electrons to form hydrogen gas (H2тАЛ), leaving hydroxide ions (OHтИТ) in solution which combine with Na+ to form NaOH. Overall┬аReaction:┬а2NaCl(aq)+2H2тАЛO(l)ElectrolysisтАЛ2NaOH(aq)+Cl2тАЛ(g)тЖС+H2тАЛ(g)тЖС
Products obtained are Chlorine (Cl2тАЛ) gas, Hydrogen (H2тАЛ) gas, and Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution.
Chlorine gas is released at the anode (positively charged electrode).
Hydrogen gas is evolved at the cathode (negatively charged electrode).
Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution is formed near the cathode.
The process uses brine, which is a concentrated aqueous solution of Sodium Chloride (Na┬аCl).
Produces three commercially useful products (NaOH, Cl2тАЛ, H2тАЛ) simultaneously.
High purity of NaOH is achieved, especially when using modern membrane cell technology.
Highly energy-intensive process requiring large amounts of electricity.
Older technologies like the mercury cell method pose serious environmental contamination hazards.
Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH): Used in soap and detergent manufacturing, paper making, and petroleum refining.
Chlorine (Cl2тАЛ): Used in water purification, PVC manufacture, disinfectants, and bleaching powder.
Hydrogen (H2тАЛ): Used in fuel cells, margarine production (hydrogenation), and ammonia synthesis for fertilizers.
Option A (SolvayтАЩs Process): Used for industrial preparation of Sodium Carbonate (Na2тАЛCO3тАЛ, washing soda) and Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3тАЛ).
Option C (HaberтАЩs Process): Used for industrial synthesis of Ammonia (NH3тАЛ) from nitrogen and hydrogen gases.
Option D (Contact Process): Used for industrial manufacture of Sulfuric Acid (H2тАЛSO4тАЛ).
B is correct тАФ Sodium hydroxide is industrially prepared by the Chlor-alkali process via the electrolysis of brine solution.
In competitive exams, electrode product locations are heavily tested: Remember Chlorine evolves at Anode (Cl2тАЛ at +) and Hydrogen evolves at Cathode (H2тАЛ at -), while NaOH remains near the Cathode.
