The MCB operates on two mechanisms: a bimetallic strip for inverse-time delayed overcurrent protection (thermal) and an electromagnetic solenoid for instantaneous short-circuit protection. When the load current exceeds the rated value InтАЛ, the heat generated by the current causes the bimetallic strip to deflect and trigger the trip mechanism; during a massive surge like a short circuit, the solenoid core moves instantly to break the circuit.
Standard MCB ratings follow the preferred number series (Renard series).
