What role does the ISRO-developed IRNSS system (now NAVIC) primarily serve?
Deep-space tracking
Geostationary weather monitoring
Regional satellite navigation for India
Satellite-based telephone services
Regional satellite navigation for India
ISRO's NavIC provides autonomous regional satellite navigation services to India and surrounding regions.
NavIC, formerly known as the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), is an autonomous regional satellite navigation system developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It was established to reduce India's dependence on foreign global navigation satellite systems like the US-owned GPS. The system ensures technological sovereignty and provides critical positioning, velocity, and timing (PVT) services for both civilian and strategic users.
The Department of Space (DoS) is the nodal agency for all space-related activities in India, functioning directly under the Prime Minister's Office. Historically, the Indian space program originated with the formation of the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) in 1962, which later became ISRO in 1969.
NavIC provides coverage over the Indian mainland and a region extending up to 1,500 km beyond its borders.
The system consists of a constellation of 7 satellites in specific orbital configurations.
NavIC offers two service categories: Standard Position Service (SPS) for civilian use and Restricted Service (RS) for strategic users.
NavIC signal accuracy is approximately 3 meters for public services and 2 meters for restricted services.
C is correct — NavIC acts as an indigenous regional satellite navigation system developed by ISRO to provide accurate positioning and timing data for India.
Remember NavIC stands for 'Navigation with Indian Constellation' and is synonymous with the Indian language word for 'sailor' or 'navigator', signifying its role in guiding movement across Indian territory.
