Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) on 9 April, 2023, during the commemorative event of 50 years of Project Tiger.
The International Big Cat Alliance was envisioned as a global initiative by India to focus on the protection and conservation of seven major big cats: Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar, and Cheetah. The alliance seeks to foster international cooperation, knowledge sharing, and capacity building among range countries to address threats like habitat loss and poaching. It aims to integrate conservation efforts with the sustainable development of local communities residing in these habitats.
The IBCA finds its conceptual roots in the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which provides the legal framework for the conservation of wild animals and birds in India. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change acts as the nodal agency for the implementation of such wildlife conservation programs.
