The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was established on 24 October 1962, in the immediate aftermath of the Sino-Indian War. The force was created to provide security along the Himalayan borders from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh. Since its inception, the ITBP has evolved into a specialized mountain force tasked with border guarding, counter-insurgency, and disaster management roles in high-altitude terrain. The 65th anniversary commemorates over six decades of guarding India's border with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
The ITBP operates under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India. It was raised under the provisions of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Act until the Parliament enacted the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force Act in 1992, which currently governs its service regulations.
