Which gas is used for the artificial ripening of fruits?
Ethylene
Methane
Propane
Acetylene
Ethylene
Ethylene (C2тАЛH4тАЛ) is a natural plant hormone that regulates physiological processes such as fruit ripening, flower opening, and leaf abscission. In commercial settings, it is used to induce uniform ripening in climacteric fruits like bananas, mangoes, and tomatoes.
Think of ethylene as a 'ripening switch'; placing a ripe banana (which releases ethylene gas) in a paper bag with unripe fruits acts like a messenger that signals the others to start their ripening process simultaneously.
ETHE-ripens: E-thylene THE-ripening agent.
C2тАЛH4тАЛ тАФ Chemical formula of Ethylene
Ethylene acts as a signaling molecule that binds to specific receptors in plant cells, triggering a cascade of gene expression. This process promotes the breakdown of chlorophyll, the softening of cell walls by enzymes like pectinase, and the conversion of complex carbohydrates into simple sugars, which enhances the sweetness and color of the fruit.
Ethylene is a gas at room temperature and acts as a phytohormone.
Climacteric fruits exhibit a burst of ethylene production during their ripening phase.
Commercially, 'Ethephon' (C2тАЛH6тАЛClO3тАЛP) is often used as a source of ethylene gas.
Uniform ripening of fruit batches.
Controlled shelf-life management for commercial transport.
Safer compared to illegal chemicals like calcium carbide.
Excessive exposure can lead to over-ripening and rapid decay.
Requires controlled atmospheric chambers for optimal results.
Commercial fruit ripening chambers.
Synchronization of harvest cycles in agricultural supply chains.
Option D (Acetylene) is commonly used in the form of calcium carbide (CaC2тАЛ) for illegal ripening, but it is harmful to health due to impurities like arsenic and phosphorus.
Methane (CH4тАЛ) and Propane (C3тАЛH8тАЛ) are alkanes used primarily as fuels and play no role in biological fruit ripening.
A is correct тАФ Ethylene is the natural plant hormone responsible for inducing the ripening process in climacteric fruits.
In competitive exams, always distinguish between naturally occurring plant hormones like Ethylene and harmful industrial chemicals like Calcium Carbide (which produces Acetylene) often banned by FSSAI.
