The 2024 G20 Summit was hosted by Brazil in Rio de Janeiro following India's successful 2023 presidency.
The G20 operates on a rotating presidency model, where the host nation sets the agenda and hosts various preparatory meetings including working groups and ministerial sessions. Brazil assumed the presidency on December 1, 2023, succeeding India, to advance themes of social inclusion and sustainable development. Preparatory meetings for the 2024 summit were held across various cities in Brazil, not India. While India hosted the 2023 G20 summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, it did not host the 2024 summit events.
The G20 was founded in 1999 following the Asian Financial Crisis to promote international financial stability. It consists of 19 countries, the African Union, and the European Union, representing two-thirds of the world population.
