A Static Var Compensator (SVC) is a shunt-connected FACTS device used for reactive power control. It operates as a variable shunt susceptance to maintain the voltage profile at the point of connection by injecting or absorbing reactive power.

The SVC consists of a Thyristor Controlled Reactor (TCR) and Thyristor Switched Capacitors (TSC). By controlling the firing angle of the thyristors, the fundamental frequency component of the current through the TCR is adjusted, allowing the SVC to provide a smooth, continuous variation of shunt reactive power. When voltage is low, it injects reactive power; when voltage is high, it absorbs it.
SVC is a parallel (shunt) connected FACTS device.
It maintains bus voltage constant during load variations.
It does not contain any moving parts, hence 'Static'.
It helps in improving transient stability of the power system.
Rapid continuous voltage regulation
Improvement of steady-state stability limit
Dynamic voltage support
Generation of harmonics (requires filters)
Limited capacity to handle large power swings compared to SVC+Storage
High initial installation cost
Voltage support in weak transmission systems
Flicker compensation in industrial loads
Reactive power support for high-voltage transmission lines
TCSC, SSSC, and UPFC are series compensation devices.
TCSC (Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor) provides capacitive series compensation.
SSSC (Static Synchronous Series Compensator) uses a VSC (Voltage Source Converter) in series.
UPFC (Unified Power Flow Controller) is the most advanced, capable of both series and shunt compensation.
D is correct тАФ The SVC is the only device listed that is connected in shunt to the transmission line for reactive power compensation.
Remember: SVC and STATCOM are shunt devices, whereas TCSC, SSSC, and UPFC involve series compensation or combinations.
