BIS operates under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. It formulates standards through technical committees comprising experts from industry, academia, and research organizations to ensure products meet defined safety and performance criteria, specifically for industrial components like rotating electrical machines.
BIS was formerly known as the Indian Standards Institution (ISI).
It maintains the 'ISI' mark for industrial products to denote compliance with Indian standards.
Rotating machines like induction motors must comply with specific IS codes (e.g., IS 12615 for efficiency classes).
Standardization ensures interoperability and safety in engineering systems.
Ensures uniform quality and safety across products
Facilitates international trade via harmonization
Cost of compliance testing for small manufacturers
Rigidity in rapidly evolving technology sectors
Electrical equipment manufacturing
Testing and laboratory certification
Consumer safety protection
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) represents international standards, not specifically 'Indian' ones.
IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is a global professional association focused on technical standards, mainly for electronics and communications.
NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) is a US-based trade association, often confused with Indian standards.
A is correct тАФ BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) is the national authority responsible for maintaining and issuing Indian Standards.
In competitive exams, always distinguish between National Standards (BIS), International Standards (ISO), and Professional/Trade Body Standards (IEEE, NEMA).
