Which of the following is the standard defending the Guide for Testing of Direct Current (dc) Machines?
IS 2026:Part 1-10
IS 9320:1979
IS 13956:1994
IS 4029:2010
IS 9320:1979
IS 9320:1979 is the Indian Standard officially designated for the 'Guide for Testing of Direct Current (dc) Machines'. This standard outlines the specific testing methodologies, acceptance criteria, and measurement techniques required for DC motors and generators in the Indian industrial context.

The testing guide provides a structured framework for verifying machine performance, including parameters like temperature rise, insulation resistance, voltage regulation, and commutation efficiency. By following IS 9320, engineers ensure uniformity in result reporting and compliance with safety standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
IS 9320:1979 specifies the routine, type, and special tests for DC rotating machines.
The standard covers methods to determine efficiency through direct loading or indirect (back-to-back/Hopkinson) testing.
It addresses temperature rise tests specifically to evaluate the thermal limits of insulation classes.
Ensures compliance with international standards like IEC 60034 series for machine rotating equipment.
Provides standardized methodology for industrial acceptance tests.
Ensures safety and performance reliability in critical engineering applications.
Standard is dated (1979) and may require supplementary updates for modern digital diagnostic techniques.
Adherence is mandatory for government tenders in India but can be perceived as restrictive.
Quality control in manufacturing of DC motors/generators.
Commissioning and site acceptance testing (SAT) in power plants and industries.
IS 2026 refers to Power Transformers (Part 1-10).
IS 13956:1994 relates to testing of submersible pump motors.
IS 4029:2010 relates to the Guide for Testing of Three-Phase Induction Motors.
B is correct тАФ IS 9320:1979 is the designated Indian Standard for testing DC machines.
Always verify the application of the standard (Motor/Generator vs Transformer) as similar numbering codes (e.g., IS 2026 vs IS 9320) are common traps in competitive exams.
