Chabahar Port is part of which international transport corridor?
INSTC (The International North-South Transport Corridor)
The belt and road initiative
The Trans-Siberian Railway
The Pan-American Highway
INSTC (The International North-South Transport Corridor)
India's Chabahar Port functions as a critical gateway for the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) to enhance connectivity with Central Asia and Russia.
The Chabahar Port, located on Iran's southeastern coast, is a strategic project developed by India to bypass logistical hurdles caused by land-based trade routes through Pakistan. It serves as the primary maritime node for the INSTC, a 7,200 km multimodal network aimed at reducing time and cost for moving goods between India, Iran, Russia, and Europe. In 2026, the operationalization of the 750 km Chabahar-Zahedan railway line significantly strengthens this route, providing India seamless access to Afghanistan and landlocked Central Asian nations.
The INSTC agreement was first signed in 2002 by India, Iran, and Russia to establish a trade corridor connecting the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea via Iran. Geographically, Chabahar is the only Iranian port with direct access to the Indian Ocean, located outside the Persian Gulf, making it immune to potential blockades in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Chabahar-Zahedan railway spans approximately 750 km.
INSTC is a 7,200 km multimodal transport corridor.
The India-Iran agreement for developing the Chabahar port was originally signed in 2002.
The project aims to increase the port's cargo handling capacity to 12.5 million tons annually.
A is correct тАФ Chabahar Port is an integral maritime node connecting India to the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) for trade with Eurasia.
Remember that INSTC acts as a competitive counter to land-locked routes, similar to how the Suez Canal provides a shorter maritime route to Europe; link Chabahar to your geography map of Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province.
