The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) serves as a strategic Indo-Pacific framework primarily to balance the growing influence of China.
The Quad is a strategic security dialogue between India, the United States, Japan, and Australia, aimed at ensuring a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. It emerged from the initial cooperation during the 2004 Tsunami relief efforts and was formalised to address complex geopolitical challenges in the maritime domain. Member nations regularly conduct naval exercises, such as Malabar, to strengthen interoperability and maritime domain awareness against regional security threats.
The Indo-Pacific region is of vital importance to India's 'Act East' policy, which focuses on enhancing economic and security ties with Southeast Asian nations. Historically, this aligns with India's long-standing commitment to the 'Look East' policy, initiated in the early 1990s to integrate with the Asia-Pacific economies.
Participating nations include India, USA, Japan, and Australia
Primary focus area is the maintenance of a free and open Indo-Pacific
Naval cooperation is manifested through the annual Malabar Exercises
The grouping evolved from the Tsunami Core Group formed in 2004
