Glacier deposited soils are called
talus
loess
drift
none of the above
drift
Glacial deposits are geological materials transported and deposited by the action of moving glaciers. These materials are collectively termed 'drift', which includes both unstratified material deposited directly by ice (till) and material sorted/stratified by meltwater (outwash).
Glacial deposits are geological materials transported and deposited by the action of moving glaciers. These materials are collectively termed 'drift', which includes both unstratified material deposited directly by ice (till) and material sorted/stratified by meltwater (outwash).
As a glacier moves, it scours and plucks rock fragments from the terrain, incorporating them into the ice mass. When the glacier reaches a warmer climate or reaches its limit, the ice melts and releases the debris. The heterogeneous mix of particles ranging from boulders to clay deposited directly is known as glacial till, while meltwater streams transport and deposit finer, stratified layers known as outwash.
Glacial drift is the general term for all glacial deposits.
Glacial till is characterized by a high degree of heterogeneity (poorly graded).
Outwash deposits are generally stratified and sorted due to water action.
Glacial deposits are widespread in regions formerly covered by continental ice sheets.
Glacial till often forms stable foundations due to its dense, over-consolidated nature.
Glacial outwash deposits are typically clean and can act as good aquifers.
Presence of large boulders in till can create significant challenges for piling and excavation.
Highly variable soil properties (lenses of clay/silt) can lead to differential settlement.
Geotechnical site investigations in northern latitudes.
Use of outwash gravels as construction aggregates.
Talus is soil formed by gravity (colluvial deposits).
Loess is soil deposited by wind action (aeolian deposits).
Drift covers the entire range of material types, essentially being the 'transported by ice' category.
C is correct тАФ Glacial deposited soils are collectively known as drift, which encompasses both unsorted till and sorted outwash materials.
Always differentiate between agent of transport: 'Loess' is wind (Aeolian), 'Talus' is gravity (Colluvial), and 'Drift' is ice (Glacial).
