DRDO successfully test-fired the next-generation nuclear-capable Agni-Prime ballistic missile in February 2025.
The Agni-Prime (Agni-P) is a two-stage, canisterised, solid-propellant ballistic missile representing a technological leap for India's strategic deterrent. Designed to replace older Agni-class missiles, it offers enhanced accuracy, mobility, and ease of storage through its canister-launch system. The test serves to validate the missile's operational parameters and reliability for induction into the Strategic Forces Command arsenal.
The DRDO was formed in 1958 and functions under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. The Agni series of missiles originated from the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), which was spearheaded by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to achieve indigenous self-sufficiency in missile technology.
