The Indian Road Congress (IRC) was constituted in December 1934 on the recommendations of the Jayakar Committee to act as the supreme national body for highway engineering in India.
As a semi-official technical body, the IRC functions by pooling the knowledge of engineers, planners, and administrators to provide standardized guidelines, specifications, and codes of practice. It plays a critical role in promoting research and development in road transport infrastructure and advising the government on technical aspects of road construction and maintenance.
Formed in 1934 based on the Jayakar Committee Report (1927).
Acts as the principal advisor to the Government of India on all matters related to roads.
Publishes the 'Indian Highways' journal and various standard codes (IRC Codes).
Facilitates exchange of knowledge and professional development for highway engineers.
Standardization of highway design and construction practices nationwide.
Platform for professional networking and technical knowledge dissemination.
Defining geometric design standards for rural and urban roads.
Development of structural design codes for flexible and rigid pavements.
The Jayakar Committee was instrumental in identifying the need for a national road development policy, leading to the creation of the Central Road Fund (1929) and subsequently the IRC.
Option A (1947) refers to the year of Independence, often associated with the formation of the CRRI (Central Road Research Institute) in 1952.
Option D (1939) is unrelated to the major inception milestones of road administrative bodies in India.
B is correct тАФ The Indian Road Congress was established in 1934 to provide a common platform for technical expertise in road engineering.
Remember that the IRC (1934) precedes the Motor Vehicles Act (1939) and the Central Road Research Institute (1952) in the chronology of Indian road infrastructure development.
