International Vulture Awareness Day 2026 was celebrated on September 5, 2026.
International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD) is observed globally on the first Saturday of September each year, falling on September 5 in 2026. The initiative originated in 2006 through a joint effort between the Birds of Prey Programme in South Africa and the Hawk Conservancy Trust in the UK. The day aims to highlight the ecological role of vultures as natural scavengers and address the severe population decline caused by diclofenac poisoning, habitat loss, and electrocution. In India, conservation projects like Project Vulture and Vulture Conservation Breeding Centres (VCBCs) are key initiatives.
Vulture conservation in India is managed under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 (Schedule I protection for species like the White-rumped vulture). The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) launched the Action Plan for Vulture Conservation in India (2020тАУ2025). Additionally, breeding centres like the Jatayu Conservation Breeding Centre in Pinjore, Haryana, lead efforts to restore vulture populations.
Observance Day: First Saturday of September every year (September 5 in 2026).
Primary Goal: Raise awareness regarding vulture conservation and their role in preventing disease outbreaks.
Major Threat: Diclofenac (a veterinary non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug causing kidney failure in vultures).
Key Indian Species: White-rumped vulture, Indian vulture, and Slender-billed vulture (Critically Endangered).
C is correct тАФ International Vulture Awareness Day 2026 was observed on September 5, 2026, as it is celebrated on the first Saturday of September.
Remember that IVAD is not observed on a fixed calendar date; it follows a floating schedule (1st Saturday of September). Link this with the 2006 Indian ban on veterinary Diclofenac to solve related UPSC/SSC questions.
