Myristica Swamps, ancient freshwater ecosystems facing extinction, are primarily located in the Western Ghats of India.
Recent ecological studies have highlighted that Myristica SwampsтАФprimeval freshwater swamp forestsтАФare on the verge of extinction due to climate change, land conversion, and habitat fragmentation. These relic ecosystems are crucial for maintaining perennial stream flow and storing high amounts of carbon. Conservationists are urging immediate protection for these unique habitats across their distribution range.
Geographically, the Western Ghats (a UNESCO World Heritage site and global biodiversity hotspot) extend along the western coast of India through six states: Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. Myristica Swamps are dominated by trees of the Myristicaceae family (wild nutmeg family) and feature specialized adaptations like stilt roots and knee-like pneumatophores.
Primary occurrence: Western Ghats (Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra)
Secondary minor occurrence: Andaman and Nicobar Islands
