2070
India has officially pledged to achieve the goal of Net Zero carbon emissions by the year 2070. This commitment was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the COP26 summit in Glasgow in 2021 and is reinforced by NITI Aayog's reports on sustainable development pathways.
The legal and policy framework for India's climate commitments is anchored in the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and aligns with the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
India's Net Zero target of 2070 is part of the Panchamrit strategy announced at COP26.
NITI Aayog's report 'Scenarios Towards Viksit Bharat and Net Zero' provides the analytical framework for achieving this transition.
The transition requires a massive shift from fossil-fuel-based energy to renewable sources like solar, wind, and green hydrogen.
At COP26, India also pledged to increase its non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030.
The 2047 target (Option C) represents the goal for 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) to mark 100 years of independence, but it is not the Net Zero year.
Option B (2070) is the official target year established as the cornerstone of India's long-term low-emission development strategy.
B is correct тАФ India has officially set the target to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2070.
Link this with the topic of 'Energy Security' in Economy and 'Environmental Agreements' in Geography/Current Affairs; questions often compare India's 2070 target with China's 2060 target and the USA's 2050 goal.
