Ponnaniyar Dam is situated at the foot of the Kadavur hill region (nestled between Perumal Malai and Semmalai) in Tiruchirappalli and Karur district borders of Tamil Nadu. The Cauvery River originates at Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri Range of the Western Ghats (Karnataka) and flows eastwards into the Bay of Bengal through Tamil Nadu.
