Tamil Nadu WRD is redesigning the Cauvery surplus water diversion project to supply Ponnaniyar and Kannuthu dams via solar-powered lifting.
The Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department (WRD) was directed to redesign a project aimed at diverting surplus floodwaters from the Mayanur Barrage on the Cauvery River. Instead of traditional gravity flow channels, the revised scheme plans to use solar-powered water lifting to feed the Ponnaniyar and Kannuthu dams. Located in rain-shadow hill regions with very low natural inflow, these reservoirs will get reliable irrigation replenishment through renewable energy.
Ponnaniyar Dam is situated at the foot of the Kadavur hill region (nestled between Perumal Malai and Semmalai) in Tiruchirappalli and Karur district borders of Tamil Nadu. The Cauvery River originates at Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri Range of the Western Ghats (Karnataka) and flows eastwards into the Bay of Bengal through Tamil Nadu.
Location: Kadavur hill region (Manapparai taluk / Karur-Tiruchirappalli region), Tamil Nadu.
Source Barrage: Surplus water to be lifted from Mayanur Barrage on Cauvery River.
Energy Mechanism: Redesigned as a solar-powered water-lifting irrigation scheme.
Associated Dam: Kannuthu Dam (Elamanam village) is also included under the diversion study.
A is correct тАФ Ponnaniyar Dam is located in Tamil Nadu near Pooncholai village in the Kadavur hill region.
