Ladakh officially designates Sankoo as its eighth district in October 2026
The Ladakh administration notified the creation of Sankoo as a new district on October 16, 2026, to decentralize governance and improve public service delivery. The decision addresses a long-standing demand from the local population to bring administrative offices closer to citizens. The newly formed district includes four tehsils: Sankoo, GM Pore, TSG, and Taisuru. This expansion is part of a broader territorial reorganization that also involved the notification of 17 new tehsils earlier in July 2026.
Ladakh was established as a Union Territory on October 31, 2019, following the reorganization of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. It is currently administered by a Lieutenant Governor appointed by the President of India.
Date of notification: October 16, 2026
Total districts in Ladakh: 8
Constituent tehsils of Sankoo district: Sankoo, GM Pore, TSG, and Taisuru
Total revenue villages in Ladakh as of 2026: 151
B is correct тАФ Sankoo's formation as the eighth district of Ladakh brings the total count of districts in the Union Territory to eight.
Remember that Ladakh's administrative structure comprises 8 districts including Leh, Kargil, Drass, Sankoo, Sham, Changthang, Nubra, and Zanskar, which simplifies regional governance over difficult mountainous terrain.
