The drum situated in recording type makes one rotation for how many hours?
4 hours
24 hours
6 hours
12 hours
24 hours
In hydrometric instrumentation, a self-recording rain gauge (like the siphon-type gauge) utilizes a clockwork-driven drum. This drum is designed to complete one full rotation in 24 hours to provide a continuous temporal record of rainfall accumulation.

I=╬Фt╬ФPтАЛ тАФ where I is rainfall intensity, ╬ФP is depth change, and ╬Фt is time interval derived from the drum rotation.
The drum is coupled to a constant-speed clock mechanism. As the float rises due to increasing water level in the collection chamber, the pen attached to the float assembly records a trace on a paper chart wrapped around the drum. The 24-hour rotation allows for the analysis of rainfall intensity and duration over a standard daily period.
Recording rain gauges provide a continuous record of rainfall depth vs time.
The horizontal axis of the chart represents time, while the vertical axis represents cumulative rainfall depth.
Most standard instruments in India are calibrated for a 24-hour cycle.
The siphon mechanism automatically empties the chamber once full, resetting the trace.
Provides time distribution of rainfall
Essential for calculating storm intensity duration frequency (IDF) curves
Requires regular maintenance and clock winding
More expensive than non-recording gauges
Flood forecasting
Hydrological modeling
Urban drainage design
The rotation rate can be modified for weekly or monthly charts in specific research instruments, but 24 hours is the standard for daily meteorological stations.
Option A, C, and D represent incorrect time intervals that do not align with the standard design specification for daily hydrographs.
B is correct тАФ The standard recording rain gauge drum is engineered to complete one full revolution in a 24-hour period to facilitate daily precipitation analysis.
Always remember that time-resolution in hydrology is key; 24-hour cycles are standard for daily rain gauges, whereas sub-daily records are required for high-intensity flash flood analysis.
