India co-hosted the launch of OneSCD, a global partnership to advance equity in Sickle Cell Disease care, during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in September 2026.
The OneSCD partnership was established to bridge the significant global health equity gap for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), which currently affects over seven million people worldwide. While survival rates in high-income nations exceed 95 percent, up to 90 percent of untreated children in sub-Saharan Africa die before age five. India joined the global coalition alongside the Government of Nigeria, UNICEF, WHO, and Africa CDC to promote scalable newborn screening and strengthen health systems. This initiative aligns with India's ongoing efforts to eliminate Sickle Cell Anemia domestically.
Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic blood disorder characterized by abnormal hemoglobin (HbS), which is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. In India, the National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission was launched by the Union government to address the disease, particularly among tribal populations, aiming for elimination by 2047.
