Washing soda (Na 2 CO 3 ·10H 2 O) is obtained from which compound in the Solvay process?
Sodium chloride
Sodium hydroxide
Sodium bicarbonate
Sodium sulphate
Sodium bicarbonate
Washing soda (Sodium carbonate decahydrate, Na2CO3⋅10H2O) is manufactured industrially via the Solvay process. In this process, carbon dioxide is passed through an ammoniacal solution of sodium chloride, precipitating out sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), which is subsequently calcined to sodium carbonate and then recrystallized.

Think of baking soda (NaHCO3) as the raw flour dough and washing soda (Na2CO3⋅10H2O) as the baked bread; baking soda is heated and processed to transform it into the final chemical product used for cleaning.
Solvay makes Soda from Salt and Baking Soda: S-S-B (Solvay - Sodium chloride - Bicarbonate).

The Solvay process involves the reaction of sodium chloride, ammonia, and carbon dioxide in water to precipitate sodium bicarbonate: Na Cl+NH3+CO2+H2O→NaHCO3↓+NH4Cl. The separated sodium bicarbonate is then thermally decomposed (calcined) at high temperatures to form anhydrous sodium carbonate (soda ash): 2NaHCO3ΔNa2CO3+H2O+CO2. Finally, dissolving soda ash in water and recrystallizing yields washing soda containing ten molecules of water of crystallization: Na2CO3+10H2O→Na2CO3⋅10H2O.
