What is the upper surface of the zone saturation called?
Aquifer
quiclude
Water table
Aquifuge
Water table
The water table represents the upper boundary of the zone of saturation, where all voids in the soil and rock are completely filled with water. Below this surface, the pore water pressure is greater than atmospheric pressure.

P=╬│wтАЛh тАФ Pressure head in the saturated zone, where P is pressure, ╬│wтАЛ is unit weight of water, and h is depth below the water table.
The soil profile is divided into the zone of aeration (vadose zone) and the zone of saturation. As infiltration occurs, water percolates downward through the unsaturated soil until it reaches a level where all interconnected pores are filled with water; this interface acts as the phreatic surface, commonly known as the water table.
The water table is not a fixed horizontal plane but fluctuates based on recharge, discharge, and extraction.
Capillary action can create a capillary fringe above the water table where water is held in pores by surface tension.
The water table typically mimics the topography of the land surface, though in a more subdued form.
Determines the depth required for successful well drilling.
Provides information regarding the potential for groundwater contamination.
Seasonal fluctuations can cause issues with foundation stability (e.g., settlement).
High water tables can lead to soil liquefaction during seismic events.
Hydrogeological mapping and resource estimation.
Design of drainage systems and deep excavations.
Aquiclude: A saturated but impermeable formation that does not yield significant quantities of water.
Aquifer: A geological formation capable of storing and transmitting significant amounts of groundwater.
Aquifuge: A formation that is neither porous nor permeable; it neither stores nor transmits water.
C is correct тАФ The water table is defined as the upper surface of the zone of saturation in an unconfined aquifer.
Always remember that in a confined aquifer, the 'potentiometric surface' is the equivalent concept, which may be above or below the ground surface.
