Which mountain range acts as a watershed between the Indus and the Ganges river systems?
Aravalli Range
Satpura Range
Vindhya Range
Zanskar Range
Aravalli Range
The Aravalli Range acts as a primary watershed separating the drainage basins of the Indus river system, which flows into the Arabian Sea, and the Ganges river system, which flows into the Bay of Bengal. This range runs in a southwest-to-northeast direction across Rajasthan, effectively partitioning the drainage patterns of North India.

This range runs in a southwest-to-northeast direction across Rajasthan, effectively partitioning the drainage patterns of North India.
The Aravalli Range is one of the oldest fold mountains in the world, formed during the Proterozoic Era and characterized by significant erosional degradation over geological time.
The Aravalli Range extends about 692 km from Delhi to Palanpur in Gujarat.
Guru Shikhar is the highest peak of the Aravalli Range, located in the Mount Abu region.
The range plays a crucial role in preventing the desertification of the Indo-Gangetic plains by acting as a barrier to the Thar Desert.
The watershed divide is formed because the Aravallis intercept the flow of rivers in the region, directing water either toward the Luni-Indus basin or the Chambal-Yamuna-Ganges system.
The Satpura and Vindhya ranges act as a watershed between the Narmada and Tapti river systems in Central India, rather than the Indus-Ganges system.
Option B (Satpura) and Option C (Vindhya) are geographically located in Central India and do not separate the Indus from the Ganges.
Option D (Zanskar) is a sub-range of the Himalayas and is located entirely within the Indus basin, not acting as a watershed between the Indus and Ganges.
A is correct тАФ The Aravalli Range acts as the primary topographic barrier that channels drainage towards the Indus basin in the west and the Ganges basin in the east.
When studying Indian drainage, always correlate mountain ranges with their corresponding river basins; for instance, the Western Ghats act as the principal watershed for peninsular rivers.
