Which of the following is the primary objective of the 'Green Hydrogen Mission' launched by the Indian government in 2025?
To export coal to neighboring nations
To make India a global hub for green hydrogen production
To subsidize petrol prices
To increase nuclear energy capacity
To make India a global hub for green hydrogen production
The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to establish India as a global leader in the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The Government of India approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission in January 2023 to promote clean energy and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. The mission targets the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, heavy transport, and industrial heating. To achieve this, the government has set a strict standard defining green hydrogen as having less than 2 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per 1 kg of hydrogen produced.
The mission is primarily governed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), which is the nodal ministry for all non-conventional energy initiatives in India. It aligns with India's international climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and the national goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
Approved by the Union Cabinet in January 2023
Goal to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030
Certification provided by the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India launched in April 2025
Financial incentives for electrolyser manufacturing managed under the SIGHT programme
B is correct тАФ The primary goal of the National Green Hydrogen Mission is to position India as a global hub for the production, utilization, and export of green hydrogen.
Remember that green hydrogen is produced through electrolysis using renewable energy, which links directly to India's pledge of net-zero emissions by 2070 at COP26.
