The Kalpasar Project, also known as the Gulf of Khambhat Development Project, is a massive civil engineering initiative designed to create a fresh water reservoir by constructing a 30 km dam across the Gulf of Khambhat. This dam connects the districts of Bhavnagar on the western coast (Saurashtra region) and Bharuch on the eastern coast of Gujarat.

VresтАЛтЙИA├Чd тАФ where VresтАЛ is the potential reservoir capacity, A is the surface area, and d is the average depth.
The project works by closing off the Gulf of Khambhat with a dam to impound the fresh water flow from rivers like Narmada, Mahi, and Sabarmati. This creates a large reservoir that prevents fresh water from draining into the sea, essentially using the Gulf as a giant storage basin. The dam also serves as a transportation link to reduce travel distance between South Gujarat and the Saurashtra region.
The project aims to create the world's largest man-made fresh water reservoir in a marine environment.
It significantly reduces the distance between the Saurashtra region and South Gujarat.
Hydropower potential is integrated into the dam structure to utilize tidal energy.
It acts as a critical solution for irrigation and water scarcity in the Saurashtra region.
Creation of a massive fresh water storage capacity.
Reduction of road transport distance between Bhavnagar and Bharuch by approx. 200 km.
Potential for large-scale tidal power generation.
Irrigation support for water-starved regions.
High environmental impact on marine ecosystems and local fisheries.
Extremely high capital cost and complex engineering requirements.
Sedimentation issues due to high tidal flux in the Gulf of Khambhat.
Potential impact on coastal salinity levels.
Regional irrigation and water supply.
Transportation infrastructure (road connectivity).
Renewable tidal energy generation.
The Gulf of Khambhat experiences some of the highest tidal ranges in the world, which is a major design consideration for the Kalpasar dam.
Option B (Bhavnagar and Surat) is incorrect as the dam is specifically aligned between the Bhavnagar and Bharuch coastlines.
A is correct тАФ The Kalpasar Yojana involves constructing a dam across the Gulf of Khambhat to connect the Bhavnagar and Bharuch districts of Gujarat.
In competitive exams, always link 'Kalpasar' with 'Gulf of Khambhat' and the key districts 'Bhavnagar' and 'Bharuch' to identify the infrastructure link clearly.
