The project operates by constructing a barrage across the Gulf of Khambhat to convert the saline estuarine gulf into a fresh water lake. As the sea water is restricted, the inflow of fresh water from major rivers displaces the salinity, creating a reservoir that can store approximately 10,000 million cubic meters of water. This stored water is intended to be used for irrigation, drinking water supply, and power generation through tidal barrages.
Location: Gulf of Khambhat, Gujarat, India.
Objective: Creation of a large freshwater lake to prevent floodwater wastage and provide water for the Saurashtra region.
Proposed features include a 8-lane road bridge and a railway line across the dam.
The project utilizes tidal energy potential combined with water conservation.
Reduces water scarcity in the arid regions of Saurashtra.
Shortens connectivity between South Gujarat and Saurashtra by ~200 km.
Tidal power generation provides clean renewable energy.
High environmental impact on marine ecology and local biodiversity.
Significant capital expenditure and long gestation period.
Risk of sedimentation and potential alteration of tidal dynamics.
Irrigation for agricultural expansion in North and Central Gujarat.
Industrial and municipal water supply.
Transportation infrastructure development.
The project was conceptualized to address the extreme water stress in the Saurashtra peninsula.
Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan are incorrect as this project is exclusively within the geographical jurisdiction of Gujarat.
C is correct тАФ The Kalpasar Yojana is a major water resource project located in the state of Gujarat.
In competitive exams, remember that projects involving the 'Gulf of Khambhat' or 'Gulf of Kutch' are invariably associated with Gujarat's infrastructure and water management initiatives.
