SAUNI (Saurashtra Narmada Avataran Irrigation) Yojana is a major irrigation and water supply project in Gujarat designed to fill 115 reservoirs in the arid Saurashtra region using surplus water from the Narmada River. It utilizes a vast network of pipelines, canals, and dams to mitigate water scarcity and facilitate agricultural growth.

The project operates on the principle of lift irrigation and gravity-fed distribution. Surplus flood water from the Sardar Sarovar Dam is diverted through a massive pipeline network spanning over 1,100 km, integrated with existing dams and check dams to recharge the local water table and ensure irrigation availability in drought-prone areas.
Project aims to fill 115 dams in Saurashtra using Narmada water.
Eliminates dependency on erratic rainfall patterns in the region.
Pipeline-based distribution reduces water loss due to evaporation and seepage compared to open canals.
Crucial for both irrigation and municipal drinking water supply.
Significant reduction in agricultural water stress.
Recharging of groundwater aquifers through dam filling.
Minimal land acquisition compared to traditional canal networks.
High initial capital investment for pipeline infrastructure.
Energy-intensive pumping required for high-elevation areas.
Large-scale agricultural irrigation.
Municipal drinking water provision.
Industrial water supply.
The project is divided into four main 'links' to cover the 11 districts of the Saurashtra region.
Option B and C are incorrect as North Gujarat is served by different water management frameworks like the Sujalam Sufalam Yojana.
D is correct тАФ The SAUNI Yojana is a strategic infrastructure project specifically developed to interlink dams and canals within the Saurashtra region to address chronic water scarcity.
In competitive exams, always distinguish between Gujarat's water projects by region: SAUNI (Saurashtra) vs Sujalam Sufalam (North Gujarat).
