Remote Distance Measurement
Remote Distance Measurement (RDM) is a surveying technique used to determine the distance between two points where it is impossible or impractical to place measuring equipment at both ends. It typically utilizes electronic distance measurement (EDM) principles integrated within Total Stations to calculate the 3D distance between a target and a hidden or inaccessible station point.

RDM operates by measuring the horizontal distance, vertical distance, and slope distance from a known instrument setup to two different points. By observing the angles and slant distances to both the target point (A) and the remote point (B), the system uses trigonometric calculations to derive the vector between them. The distance DABтАЛ is computed based on the coordinates (E,N,Z) of both points.
RDM is a standard function in modern electronic Total Stations.
It eliminates the need for chaining or taping across obstacles like rivers or valleys.
Accuracy depends on the precision of the angular measurement and the EDM slant range resolution.
Coordinates are calculated using polar to rectangular coordinate transformation.
Allows measurement across inaccessible terrain.
High precision compared to traditional mechanical taping methods.
Saves significant time in complex surveying projects.
Requires a clear line of sight from the instrument to both points.
Requires high-quality optical and electronic instrumentation.
Susceptible to atmospheric conditions (refraction/scintillation).
Determining span lengths of bridges.
Setting out points on building facades.
Calculating clearances for high-voltage power lines.
RDM is often referred to as 'Remote Elevation' or 'Missing Line Measurement' (MLM) in various surveying manuals.
Option B (Ranging Distance) is a distractor as Ranging refers to aligning points in a line, not distance measurement calculation.
A is correct тАФ RDM stands for Remote Distance Measurement, a functionality in total stations used to calculate the distance between two points without visiting them.
Always distinguish between EDM (Electronic Distance Measurement - the physical measurement) and RDM (Remote Distance Measurement - the software-based computation of distances between two points).
