Which is the type of non-recording type rain guage?

Question

Examoogle · Accepted Answer

The correct answer is Option C: standard rain guage. A non-recording rain gauge is an instrument used to collect precipitation over a specific period without providing a continuous temporal record of intensity. The Standard Rain Gauge (Symons' gauge) is the most common example, requiring manual observation at set intervals.

Step-by-Step Solution & Concepts:
A non-recording rain gauge is an instrument used to collect precipitation over a specific period without providing a continuous temporal record of intensity. The Standard Rain Gauge (Symons' gauge) is the most common example, requiring manual observation at set intervals.

Working Principle: The principle relies on a cylindrical collection vessel with a funnel and receiver bottle. Rainwater is collected over a known area (catchment area), and the volume is measured manually using a graduated cylinder to determine the depth of rainfall at that location.

Key Formulas: $d = \frac{V}{A}$ — Where $d$ is depth of rainfall, $V$ is volume of water, and $A$ is the cross-sectional area of the collector.

Key Points: Non-recording gauges provide total rainfall depth for a specific period but not the intensity variations.; The standard size for the aperture in India as per IMD is 127 mm diameter.; Manual observation is mandatory at 8:30 AM (IST) daily for standard gauges.; Recording gauges provide a graphical record of intensity vs. time (Hyetograph).

Advantages: High simplicity in construction and operation.; Low maintenance and cost-effective for large networks.; Less prone to mechanical failure.

Disadvantages: Does not provide the distribution of rainfall over time.; Requires manual intervention, prone to human error during reading.; Cannot determine peak rainfall intensity.

Applications: Meteorological data collection in remote areas.; Hydrological studies requiring long-term daily total precipitation.; General climate monitoring.

Additional Info: Option A (Tipping bucket) is an automatic recording gauge.. Option B (Float type) is a recording gauge often used in natural siphoning mechanisms.

Answer: C is correct — The standard rain gauge is a non-recording type gauge because it simply collects water for manual measurement and does not record the time distribution of rainfall.

Exam Tip: Always remember that 'Recording' refers to automated tracking (e.g., Float, Tipping Bucket, Weighing Bucket), while 'Non-recording' signifies manual total-depth gauges like Symons' rain gauge.
