Which is the type of recording type rain guage?

Question

Examoogle · Accepted Answer

The correct answer is Option D: all of the above. Recording rain gauges are automatic instruments designed to produce a continuous or time-stamped log of rainfall intensity and duration. All three listed types (Weighing, Tipping, and Float) are standard classifications used in hydrometeorological observations to measure rainfall data automatically without manual intervention.

Step-by-Step Solution & Concepts:
Recording rain gauges are automatic instruments designed to produce a continuous or time-stamped log of rainfall intensity and duration. All three listed types (Weighing, Tipping, and Float) are standard classifications used in hydrometeorological observations to measure rainfall data automatically without manual intervention.

Working Principle: 1. Weighing type: Records the accumulated weight of the collected rain on a spring balance or load cell. 2. Tipping bucket type: Uses two compartments that tip alternately once a specific volume of rain is collected, triggering an electrical contact. 3. Float type: A float inside a receiver chamber rises as water level increases, moving a pen across a rotating chart.

Key Formulas: $I = \frac{\Delta P}{\Delta t}$ — where $I$ is rainfall intensity, $\Delta P$ is depth of precipitation, and $\Delta t$ is time interval.

Key Points: Recording rain gauges provide a hyetograph (plot of intensity vs time).; Non-recording rain gauges (e.g., Symons gauge) only provide the total depth over a fixed period.; Tipping bucket gauges are most suitable for electronic data logging due to pulse outputs.

Advantages: Eliminates the human error associated with manual reading.; Captures temporal distribution (intensity variation) of storms.

Disadvantages: Higher initial cost and maintenance compared to non-recording types.; Prone to mechanical failure or clock errors.

Applications: Flood forecasting and drainage design.; Hydrological modeling of urban water systems.

Additional Info: The float type gauge is also commonly known as the Natural Syphon rain gauge.. Option C contained a typo 'float type type' which is corrected to 'float type'.

Answer: D is correct — All listed options represent established categories of automatic rain gauges used in professional meteorological stations.

Exam Tip: Always distinguish between depth measurement (non-recording) and intensity measurement (recording) when solving hydrology exam questions.
